Biodiversity
SCN 2-01a: I can identify and classify examples of living things past and present, to help my appreciate their diversity. I can relate physical and behavioural characterisitics to their survival or extinction
SCN 3-01a: I can sample and identify living things from different habitats to compare their biodiversity and can suggest reasons for their distribution
SCN 4-01a: I understand how animal and plant species depend on each other and how living things are adapted for survival. I can predict the impact of population growth and natural hazards on biodiversity
SCN 3-5b: I can explain some of the processes which contribute to climate change and disucss the possible impact of atmospheric change on the survival of living things
SCN 4-18a: I can monitor the environment by collecting and analysing sampls. I can interpret the results to inform others about levels of pollution and express a considered opinion
SCN 4-12b: Through investigation, I can explain how changes in learned behaviour due to internal and external stimuli are of benefit to the survivial of species

Sampling
Take the opportunity to use resources around the school:
Quadrats, transects, pitfall traps, rock pooling, tree beating, moth trapping, kick nettng, pond dipping... |
Using Keys
I have used the materials provided here several times in a carousel / circus style lesson; I would suggest about 10 minutes per station to begin with, then reduce the time as learners pick up pace.
Preparation: Print and laminate the materials provided |
Images for invertebrate key.

Making Keys
A means of assessing learner understanding of keys.
Ask learners to design a key to identify the members of one direction or the saturdays... Ask learners to turn a branching key into a paired statement key... Ask learners to create a key for identifying liquorice allsorts (even better most won't eat your resources because they don't like liquorice!) Useful LinksActivity: Liquorice Allsorts Key Idea
