Organ Systems
SCN 3-12a: I have explored the structure and function of organs and organ systems and can relate this to the basic biological processes required to sustain life
SCN 3-12b: I have explored the role of technology in monitoring health and improving the quality of life
SCN 3-13c: I have explored how the body defends itself against disease and can describe how vaccines can provide protection
SCN 4-12a: I can explain how biological actions which take place in response to external and itnernal chamges work to maintain stable body conditions
SCN 4-13c: I can debate the moral and ethical issues associated with some controversial biological procedures

Introduction to Organ Systems
Challenge learners, in pairs or groups, to draw around each other and place in all the internal organs.
Learners could be provided with organs to stick on to their diagram or could be challenged further by asking them to create their own; they should be encouraged to think carefully about scale and positioning. This activity will highlight to you, and learners, how much they already know about organ systems. Useful LinksInteractive: Life Processes Interactive Activity

Digestive System
1. Structure and function of the digestive system
a) get learners to become experts on one part of the digestive system and teach others in their group. Information and research sheets provided. b) model gut experiment with visiking tubing 2. Teeth and Mouth a) investigate skulls; relate tooth structure to function and diet b) effect of amylase; hold a piece of bread in mouth until sweet c) process of peristalsis; drink a carton of juice upside down 3. Stomach and Intestines a) large surface area for absorption; demonstrate using a packet of starburst. Carefully open packet and spread out wrapper. Eat each of the individual sweets carefully opening each wrapper. Compare the surface area of the whole sweet packet and the individual wrappers... much larger surface area! b) demonstrate the function of bile as an emulsifier using full fat milk, food colouring and some washing up liquid 4. Perfect Pooh Practical! a) a very fun, but messy, practical! Follow the journey of food from beginning to end of the digestive system. Useful LinksGLOW: Digestion

Respiratory System
1. Structure and function of the respiratory system
a) complete a dissection b) construct a model lung from a bottle and balloons 2. Lung measurements: a) take lung measurements; tidal volume, lung capacity and peak flow Useful LinksGLOW: Lungs

Circulatory System
1. Structure and function of the circulatory system
a) complete a large demonstration dissection b) buy small individual lambs hearts (pack of 3 from tescos) and allow learners to do their own dissection Useful Links |
Nervous System
1. Brain and CNS
a) make a hemisphere hat 2. Eyes: a) construct pin hole camera b) play hoop-la; compare use of one/two eyes on aim c) dissection of an eye d) construct/explore a model eye 3. Ears: a) play clapping game; whole class sits in a large circle, in the middle blindfold one person and cover one ear with a good headphone/scarf. Instruct the blindfolded person to point in the direction of each clap. Silently point a learners in the circle to clap... observe the accuracy of judging direction with one ear vs. two.
